Sometimes building (2 to 4 months) can be faster than waiting for a short sale (3 to 6 months) and you get to choose how the house looks.
Building prices start at $60 a sq ft. (Short sales average $68-$85 a sq ft) When going with a building Company, the building experience is wonderful. They take care of everything even the loan so you only close once when the house is finished.
Most important it is a good idea to be represented by a buyers agent (the price is the same if you have or don't have an agent for most builder's).
